Classes and events 4 Just What the Dr. Ordered—Mini Medical School High school students, adult learners and retirees may choose to participate in person or virtually to gain medical science knowledge. There is no charge, thanks to a GCMH Foundation Community Health Grant. You may attend just one session or the entire series. ● Tuesdays, Nov. 2, Nov. 9, Nov. 16, Nov. 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m. GCMH Education Room and a virtual option, as needed CPR/First Aid/AED Members of the public and those who need to be certified in lifesaving skills for their job are invited to take advantage of classes to learn CPR for adults, infants and children, as well as how to use a defibrillator. The class also includes choking and first aid skills. Class size is limited. $65 covers the cost of materials and a certification card. ● Saturdays, Oct. 16, Dec. 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Diabetes Prevention Program A program fully recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now offered in person and virtually. If you are at risk* for developing type 2 diabetes or your doctor has told you that you have pre-diabetes, this program is for you! Did you know that you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by losing weight, eating healthier and being more active? You will receive the expertise of a lifestyle coach trained specifically in Prevent T2, which is the name of the CDC’s program to help Americans prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. A provider’s referral is NOT needed to join the program, whose costs may be covered by your Medicare program or health insurance plan. Most health savings accounts also allow you to use funds to pay for prevention programs. *Pre-diabetes risk factors include being overweight, having higher-than-normal glucose numbers and leading a sedentary lifestyle. ● Next session begins Monday, Oct. 11. Diabetes Education The Diabetes Education program at GCMH provides the expertise of a licensed and registered dietitian nutritionist to provide optimal care and education to those who are managing diabetes. The program cost is covered by many health insurance companies and Medicare, upon physician referral. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with diabetes or wish to have an annual follow-up session to review nutrition and disease management, this program can meet your needs. Education takes place in an individual or small group setting. The GCMH program is accredited by the American Diabetes Association and taught by Wendy Brewer, RDN, LD, Dietitian. GCMH Support Groups Living with a chronic illness is challenging, and the hospital’s support groups offer the help of a specially trained nurse to lead the group as well as the comfort of knowing you’re not alone. Support groups will resume in-person meetings quarterly. The Iowa Insurance Department sponsors trained volunteers who act as advisers through your initial Medicare enrollment and each fall during open enrollment, which begins Oct. 15 and wraps up Dec. 7 for 2022 plans.
