Spring brings a welcome change of scenery for Iowans. And whether you’re a dedicated year-round exerciser or a “fair weather friend” to healthy movement, there’s proof that getting outdoors provides a boost. As the nationwide coronavirus pandemic has shuttered school athletic programs, adult recreation programs and fitness centers, there are even more good rea- sons to get your family moving together outdoors this summer. Research suggests that outdoor exer- cise delivers health benefits that can’t be duplicated indoors. And a key one is a bigger boost in positive emotions. Being active can ease anxiety, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and boost your immune system. One study, for example, found that outdoor workouts can lift your mood more and help you feel more energetic and revitalized than indoor ones. An- other found that as few as five min- utes of outdoor exercise can improve self-esteem, especially if you’re near greenery or water. Moving your workouts outdoors also lets you: Connect with nature. That’s one of the best perks of outdoor exercise. Think of it this way: Where are you likely to enjoy exercise more, on a treadmill in your basement or on the Comet Trail between Conrad and Beaman? Save money. You don’t have to go far to find a space to walk or jog. Potentially burn more calories. When you’re jogging or biking outdoors, a strong headwind can help you burn more calories. You have to work harder to overcome the wind’s resistance. Get out and enjoy! A short drive can take you to these destinations for healthy movement and relaxation: ●   ● Comet Trail: a 6.5-mile trail between Wolf Creek Park, Beaman and Conrad. ●   ● Pioneer Trail: a 12-mile trail; sections are located between Holland and Grundy Center and east of Grundy Center, through Morrison, to west of Reinbeck. ●   ● Grundy County Lake, Dike: An asphalt hiking and biking trail surrounds the lake. ●   ● Pine Lake State Park, Eldora: An asphalt walking and biking trail sur- rounds the lake. ●   ● Liberty Park, Grundy Center: sand volleyball and playground. ●   ● Miracle Park, Parkersburg: a pickleball court, playgrounds and sand volleyball. ●   ● Elmwood Park, Reinbeck: an asphalt walking trail and playground. ●   ● Strohbehn Park, Reinbeck: a disc golf course. Note that state health regulations regarding the pandemic may impact park and playground availability. Find a new local spot to get outdoors this summer, while maintaining social distancing.
