Classes and events Healthy Lifestyle Challenge The 12-week course combines the power of small-group coaching, nutrition education from registered dietitian-nutritionists, health information from registered nurses, and pre- and post-program measurements to track progress. New class materials and “Do This, Don’t Diet” techniques will be featured. A free membership to the Grundy Family YMCA is included for the class term. Diabetes Prevention Program Preview session Jan. 21—New class forming Did you know you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by eating better, being more active and losing weight? The Grundy County Memorial Hospital “Live Well Diabetes Prevention Program” is fully recognized by the nation’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), features the CDC’s PREVENT T2 curriculum, and is led and facilitated by a certified lifestyle coach. The hospital’s Diabetes Prevention Program has demonstrated excellent outcomes and can help you prevent or significantly delay developing type 2 diabetes. One out of 3 Iowans has pre-diabetes or is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and the statistics are no different for our community. A doctor’s referral is not necessary to enroll in the class. ●   ● Tuesday, Jan. 21, 5 to 6 p.m., free Preview Session The class day and time will be determined by those who enroll in the program Love Your Heart FREE Heart Disease Risk Screening Event Friday, Feb. 14, 6 to 7:30 a.m., Grundy Family YMCA Every heartbeat matters! Know your key numbers for good health by stopping by the Y for a 15-minute screening that provides results you can take with you. Assessment includes blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index. Please stop eating and drinking 10 to 12 hours before your screening. Diabetes Self- Management Education The diabetes education program provides the expertise of licensed and registered dietitian-nutritionist Wendy Brewer to provide optimal care and education to people who are managing diabetes. The program cost is covered by many health insurance companies and Medicare when you have a referral from your doctor. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, or wish to have an annual follow-up session to review nutrition and disease management, this program can meet your needs and support your efforts to live well with type 2 diabetes. The program is accredited by the American Diabetes Association. For scheduling information, please phone 319-824-5081 or 888-824-5081 . CPR/First Aid Take advantage of classes for members of the general public to learn CPR for adults, infants and children, including defibrillator use. The class also includes choking and first aid skills—with instruction focused on non-health care professionals. Class size is limited. Cost is $65 to cover materials and a certification card. Saturdays, Feb. 22, April 25 and June 27, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Live Well Lab Wellness Screening GCMH makes it convenient for you to know your key numbers for health and stay on top of any health issues you may have. Commonly ordered blood screening tests are available to members of the public on a walk-in basis, without a physician or provider order.
