Classes Just What the Dr. Ordered GCMH experts introduce lifestyle strategies and choices to help you reach your health goals. Whether it’s preventing diseases for which you may be at risk, weight loss, or improved cholesterol levels and blood pressure control, this popular series will provide practical take-home tips that can make a difference. There is no cost to attend, but registration is requested. ● ● Monday, June 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., “Making ‘Good For You Foods’ Good to Eat!” Healthier cooking techniques, recipe makeovers, and how to build flavor without extra added sugar, fat and salt. ● ● Thursday, July 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Grundy Center Farmer’s Market Join GCMH during the Grundy County Fair and enjoy a fresh salad created from local produce. Take home the recipe. ● ● Monday, Aug. 20, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., “Myth Busters for Parents” Learn five common myths about healthy eating and activity and then “bust” those myths and have the knowledge you need. You’ll also receive nutrition and physical activity tips to benefit your active teen. Diabetes Prevention Program— Free Preview Session Did you know you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by eating better, being more active and losing weight? If your doctor has told you that you have pre-diabetes or you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, this program is for you. At the free preview session, you’ll receive an overview of the prevention program, a sample class schedule and hear testimonials from people who have completed the program. Call 319-824-4154 for more information. ● ● Monday, June 4, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Diabetes Self- Management Education The Diabetes Education program at GCMH provides the expertise of a licensed and registered dietitian nutritionist to provide optimal care and education for people who are managing diabetes. The program cost is covered by many health insurance companies and Medicare upon physician referral. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with diabetes, or wish to have an annual follow-up session to review nutrition and disease management, this program can meet your needs. Education takes place in an individual or small group setting with Wendy Brewer, RDN, LD. The GCMH program is accredited by the American Diabetes Association. Schedule an appointment with a GCMH registered dietitian nutritionist. You can expect to leave with a plan to achieve your health goals. Schedule your personalized nutrition coaching by calling GCMH Scheduling at 319-824-5081 . ● ● Initial one-hour session: $50; 30-minute follow-up visits: $25 CPR and First Aid Class Take advantage of classes to learn CPR for adults, infants and children, as well as how to use a defibrillator. The class also includes choking and first aid skills. Class size is limited. ● ● Saturdays, June 9, July 14, Aug. 18, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $65 and includes the cost of materials and a certification card. Safe Sitter™ This daylong class provides young teens important life skills, and provides parents peace of mind that their children are able to stay home alone safely or care for younger children. Safe Sitter teaches everything from simple food preparation to safety tips, such as what to do in case of severe weather, power loss or other emergency. Includes basic first aid, choking, and CPR instruction. Children need to have completed fifth grade by the date of the class. The class is taught jointly by GCMH and Iowa State Extension— Grundy County. ● ● Thursday June 7, 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Cost is $35. Students need to have completed the fifth grade in order to enroll in Safe Sitter. New Fall Class! Live Well Healthy Lifestyle Challenge If your doctor has suggested that you need to lose weight or reduce your blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol to lessen your risk for health problems, this class is for you! It combines the best of the hospital’s popular 100-Day Weight Loss Challenge with proven disease prevention strategies.
