Classes and events Just What the Dr. Ordered: The Truth About Diets Are you frustrated by losing weight, only to gain it back? Have you wondered what’s behind food cravings? Do you wonder if dieting is safe or if there is a better way to health and well-being? Listen in on the latest “Just What the Dr. Ordered” sessions to learn the answers to these questions and many more. The series features an eye-opening discussion on the science of dieting with subject expert Alison St. Germain, MS, RD, LD. St. Germain is an Iowa State University dietitian, the Iowa Academy of Dietetics Chair, a “Health for Every Body” facilitator and a certified intuitive eating counselor. The class will be live on the hospital’s Facebook page four days in March. ● Tuesdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, noon. Healthy Lifestyle Challenge If you want to nourish your body and work to develop a healthy relationship with food while improving your health and fitness, this program is for you! It combines the power of small-group coaching, nutrition education from a registered dietitian nutritionist, and pre- and post-program measurements to track progress. Intuitive eating materials and techniques will be featured throughout this course. Bonus: free access to the Grundy Family YMCA throughout the three-month class. ● Monday, March 28, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Free preview session to enroll and record pre-program measurements. ● Monday, April 4, 5:30 p.m. Class begins and runs weekly through June 27. This free, five- session course covers several topics, including a two-part series on mental health with lifestyle habits to combat anxiety and depression; sports medicine, including foot and ankle health; and more timely topics! ● Tuesdays, Feb. 1 through March 1, 7 p.m. Register for the free courses at dmu.edu/ minimed . Diabetes Prevention Program Did you know you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by eating better, being more active and losing weight? The hospital’s Diabetes Prevention Program features the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s PREVENT T2 curriculum and is led by a certified lifestyle coach. It also has proven results in helping prevent or significantly delay developing type 2 diabetes. A doctor’s referral is not necessary to enroll. New: Two class formats are offered! ● Convenient 12-month online course. ● Traditional small-group class with a virtual option. Class dates and times will be determined by those who enroll. Diabetes Self- Management Education Whether you’re newly diagnosed or wish to have an annual session to review disease management, this program provides optimal care and education to people who are managing diabetes. The American Diabetes Association accredits the program, and the cost is covered by many health insurance companies and Medicare when you have a referral from your doctor. CPR for adults, infants and children, including defibrillator use as well as choking and first aid skills, are taught in this six-hour class that qualifies for those who provide child care or work in other settings that require regular CPR certification. Instruction is designed for non-health care professionals.
