Classes and events Healthy Lifestyle Challenge Move the numbers where they matter to you! Whether it’s your cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, blood sugar or other numbers that need improvement, this class will provide you with coaching, education and encouragement to be in control. This program is not a diet, but a lifestyle management program taught by dietitian- nutritionists and cardiac nurses. Each class participant will work with a health coach to choose health-related goals and determine individual actions to take. As a group, class members will complete the Intuitive Eating Workbook . Wrap up the Challenge with post-program measurements and a review of your progress with a health coach. Cost is $150 for the 12-week program. ●   ● Classes begin Monday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m. and continue to December. Just What the Dr. Ordered—Mini Medical School New! Just What the Dr. Ordered takes you to medical school! Each class will provide an opportunity to gain medical science knowledge, to get a glimpse of the inner workings of hospital and clinic departments, to experience hands-on medical learning activities, and to interact with and ask questions of medical professionals. Attend just one session or all four topics—there is no charge, but pre-registration is requested to plan for materials. Individual session topics will be announced mid-September. ●   ● Tuesdays, Oct. 29, Nov. 5, Nov. 12, Nov. 26, 6:30 to 8 p.m. CPR/First Aid Members of the public and those who need to be certified in lifesaving skills for their job are invited to take advantage of classes to learn CPR for adults, infants and children, as well as how to use a defibrillator. The class also includes choking and first aid skills. Class size is limited. $65 covers the cost of materials and a certification card. ●   ● Saturdays, Sept. 21, Oct. 26, Nov. 9, Dec. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Safe Sitter ® This daylong class gives parents peace of mind that their children, sixth through eighth grade or older, are able to stay home alone safely or babysit for other families with the knowledge to care for younger children safely. The program is part of the national Safe Sitter program, developed by a health care provider in an effort to equip young teens with important skills. The Safe Sitter program is offered by Grundy County Extension Service and Grundy County Memorial Hospital, who each provide certified instructors. Cost is $35. Students must have completed the fifth grade to enroll. ●   ● Saturday, Nov. 2, 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Diabetes Prevention Program Did you know that you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by eating better, being more active and losing weight? If your doctor has told you that you have pre-diabetes or are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, this program is for you. Diabetes Education GCMH professionals help you and your doctor develop a plan that works best for you. Call your medical provider’s office for a referral. SHIIP (Senior Health Insurance Information Program) Need help assessing your Medicare options? The Iowa Insurance Department sponsors trained volunteers who act as advisers through your initial Medicare enrollment and each fall during open enrollment.
